GTA woman has niqab pulled off in assault

A Muslim woman from Mississauga, Ont., who had her niqab pulled from her face at a local mall, says her young children no longer feel secure with only her nearby.

Inas Kadri, whose assault at Sheridan Centre in Mississauga was caught on a security camera, spoke to CBC News on Tuesday as she awaits the sentencing of the woman who attacked her.

Kadri was shopping with her three-year-old son and two-year-old daughter when she was approached by two women. One of the women began swearing at her, about her religion and her veil, telling her, "Leave our country. Go back to your country," Kadri said.

The woman can be seen in the video grabbing Kadri's veil and pulling her off-camera. The attacker walked away while Kadri ran for help.

"Being attacked for no reason — for no reason — that's something difficult," she said.

Kadri's victim impact statement reads, in part, that, "My kids don't feel secure with me alone, and always prefer to have someone bigger in size than me to feel safe."

The accused, Rosemarie Creswell, pleaded guilty after the video was played in court.

When CBC News spoke to Creswell on the phone, she admitted to pulling off the veil but insisted it was all just a misunderstanding, before hanging up mid-interview.

Kadri believes the attack was motivated by hate, which could bring a stiffer sentence.

York University law professor Faisal Kutty, who is Muslim, will watch for the judge's sentencing Friday with interest.

"As Canadians in a multicultural, liberal, democratic society, I think we need to send a clear message and I hope the judge does so," he said.

Kadri said she won't stop wearing her face veil no matter what anyone else says or does.

"Not my father, not my husband, not no one at all," she said. " It's me, and it's my choice."

Criticism, applause for prison guard accommodations

OTTAWA — Correctional Service of Canada is drawing both criticism and applause for taking steps to accommodate the religious and cultural practices of a female Muslim prison guard — the first ever hired in the country.

The Muslim Canadian Congress called it “apologist” and “politically correct” that CSC is designing a special hijab for wearing inside the men’s federal penitentiary where the recruit will be posted after completing a nine-week training program. MCC vice-president Salma Siddiqui declared it "nonsense" that the employee is permitted to wear long sleeves and gloves to avoid skin-to-skin contact with males and worked out prayer times with the employer.

Siddiqui insisted religious faith should not be a factor on-the-job for any employee who chooses the profession of a correctional officer.

"I don't think there should be any emphasis on Muslim or not," she told QMI Agency. "They are being Canadian and politically correct. We do not have to live with that guilt."

The recruit will wear a hijab designed to come off easily if grabbed by an inmate to gain physical control. Siddiqui said there is no religious requirement to cover one's head - that it is the "uniform" of the Muslim brotherhood and international Islamist movement - and worries it may fuel rising concerns about the "penetration" of Islamist ideology into society.

But Liberal MP Mark Holland sees no problem making certain allowances to accommodate cultural and religious practices as long as institutional security and quality of work are not compromised.

"Wherever possible, you want to see diversity in the workplace and to have a broad range of perspectives represented," he said. "Within the correctional service, that can often be an important part of rehabilitation when you have different people working in prison who will understand different cultural and religious backgrounds. That absolutely can provide great benefit in dealing with different situations that might arise within those prison walls."

Holland said the employee is blazing a new path, and hopes employees in all facets of the public service understand the benefits of a diverse work force.

Nermine Barbouch, executive director of the Canadian Muslim Forum, called the employee "courageous" to accept the job of a correctional officer.

"If both sides are OK and they have reached an agreement, there should not be a problem. She is capable of doing what any other person is doing," she said. "I don't like to look at it as reasonable accommodation or any other accommodation."

CSC formed a working group to figure out ways to ensure the employee's religious and cultural needs were accommodated within the parameters of the overarching requirements for safety and security of institution, staff and inmates, said national spokesman Graham Andrews.

In past, CSC has worked with Sikh employees to develop special turbans suitable for the prison setting. Special allowances have also been made to wear replica kirpans.

OTTAWA – Le Service correctionnel du Canada(SCC), qui vient d’engager la toute première gardienne de prison musulmane au Canada, suscite des commentaires très partagés après avoir permis à cette future employée de porter un hijab adapté aux dangers liés à l’institution.

L’agente, en formation pour encore sept semaines, pourra porter des gants et des manches longues afin d’éviter les contacts peau à peau avec les détenus, conformément à ses pratiques religieuses. Toutefois, si les circonstances l’exigent, elle pourrait être tenue de les enlever.

Une entente mutuelle entre la future agente correctionnelle et le SCC concernant les contacts physiques avec les hommes – qui sont interdits en vertu de la foi musulmane – a été établie, tout comme un calendrier des prières pendant les pauses qui respecte à la fois les obligations religieuses et le processus rigoureux de formation.

Le Congrès musulman canadien a dénoncé la «rectitude politique» démontrée par le SCC en permettant le port de ce hijab spécial.

La vice-présidente Salma Siddiqui a déclaré que ce vêtement adapté ainsi que l’horaire des prières étaient une «absurdité», précisant que les convictions religieuses ne devraient pas être un facteur à considérer pour quiconque choisit le métier d’agent correctionnel.

«Je ne crois pas qu’on devrait porter plus d’attention au fait que quelqu’un soit musulman ou non, a affirmé Mme Siddiqui à l’Agence QMI. Ils [le SCC] sont politiquement corrects. Nous n’avons pas à vivre avec ce sentiment de culpabilité.»

Mme Siddiqui a rappelé que le port du hijab n’est pas obligatoire dans la religion musulmane, et elle craint que ce vêtement alimente des craintes envers «l’infiltration» de l’idéologie islamiste dans la société, d’autant plus que le hijab est également «l’uniforme» de la confrérie musulmane et du mouvement islamiste international.

Par contre, le député libéral Mark Holland ne voit aucun problème dans ces accommodements pourvu que la sécurité dans le milieu correctionnel et la qualité du travail ne soient pas compromises.

«Quand c’est possible, vous voulez de la variété dans un milieu de travail, a dit le député. Ceci peut même faire partie du processus de réhabilitation, lorsque vous avez une variété d’individus travaillant dans les prisons qui peuvent comprendre les différences culturelles et religieuses.»

Nermine Barbouch, directrice exécutive du Forum musulman canadien, a salué le courage de l’employée pour envisager le métier d’agente correctionnelle.

«Si les deux parties en sont venues à une entente, il ne devrait pas y avoir de problème, a-t-elle dit. Elle est capable d’accomplir ce que d’autres font. Je n’aime pas voir ça comme une question d’accommodement raisonnable ou de tout autre forme d’accommodement.»

'I wanted an adventure and I wanted a job'

A Tenacious Spirit; As the first member of the Canadian Forces to wear a hijab, Wafa Dabbagh is a pioneer and has risen to the ranks of lieutenant-commander.

Lt.-Commander Wafa Dabbagh was the first member of the military to wear a hijab. She is a tiny, bubbly bundle of energy who loves Zumba fitness. She prays five times a day, keeps an immaculate home and bakes a cake for her beloved neighbours each weekend. She has a bachelor's degree, a master's in business administration and a cancer diagnosis, the last of which she treats like a bothersome cold.

Dabbagh is also a pioneer, the first member of the Canadian Armed Forces -- and still only one of a handful -- to wear a hijab, the Muslim headcovering for women.

After almost 15 years in the naval reserves, she is now a lieutenant-commander, the equivalent of a major in the army. Dabbagh is certified to shoot a C7 rifle and a 9 mm pistol, and is in the process of studying to qualify for promotion to a command position.

On Monday at Rideau Hall, Gov. Gen. David Johnston awarded the first Operational Service Medals to 50 recipients, including Dabbagh, who was recognized for her participation in Operation Proteus, a Canadian training mission in Jerusalem.

The medal recognizes those who completed non-combat overseas missions that involved a level of risk or intensity.

"I wasn't trying to prove anything or be the first at anything," says Dabbagh about her military career. "I wanted an adventure and I wanted a job."

That's the frame of mind Dabbagh was in when she wandered into an Armed Forces Recruiting Centre in Windsor.

A Palestinian born in Egypt, Dabbagh was raised in Kuwait and came to Montreal in 1990 at the age of 28.

Armed with a bachelor's degree from Kuwait, an MBA from the United States, fluent English and Arabic and functional French, she thought she'd find work easily. But the best she could do was a telemarketing job.

After she moved to Windsor in 1996 to be with her sister, Dabbagh went to the Canada Employment Office. When she had trouble getting into the building, she went next door, to the Armed Forces recruiting office. They told her how to get into the employment office, and she turned to go.

"But something made me turn back and say 'What do you have here?' " says Dabbagh. "They told me about the training I could get, the trades available, and I said 'Count me in.' "

After several hours of aptitude tests and a long interview with the senior officer at the recruiting centre, Dabbagh chose the naval reserves, knowing that the security clearance required for the regular forces would be lengthy because of her time spent abroad.

The topic of her faith, or the hijab, did not come up until a few days later, when she went to see the commanding officer of HMCS Hunter, the naval reserve division in Windsor.

"The commanding officer sat me down and said 'I don't know what to do with you,' " says Dabbagh. "He had called every branch of the forces and no one had a covered Muslim woman in their ranks. I told him, 'What you see is what you get, sir. I don't drink alcohol, I don't eat pork, but I can do everything else.' "

Dabbagh later learned other officers had advised him to talk her out of joining. "He told me that he'd said, 'If she wants to do it, she can stay.' "

Dabbagh left for basic training, where she stood out not just for the hijab, but for being much older than most of the teenage recruits. She did everything demanded of them -- the gruelling marching, the crawling through mud, the weapons training -- and was touched by what she calls the "many beautiful people" who went out of their way to be supportive. When Dabbagh asked to shower alone, after her female platoon-mates, she emerged to find that two of them had decided to stand guard outside the shower to keep latecomers from barging in. The cooks adapted meals so there would be pork-free dishes for her, and officers let her know when there was a 10-minute break coming up, so she could pray.

"One time, I moved away from the group to pray, and an officer came up to me, asking why I went away, and if somebody was bothering me," says Dabbagh. "I thought that was so sweet, and I explained to him it was the opposite, that prayer is a quiet, personal time for you and God, and everything was OK."

Dabbagh is used to charting her own course. She startled her family by putting on the hijab at age 15, becoming the first woman in her family to cover herself.

"They worried I was becoming narrow-minded, but for me it was about freedom to not be judged for my form, but for my personality and my actions."

After she passed basic training, an instructor confessed that when he heard a Muslim woman in a hijab was coming for training, he had said he didn't want her in his platoon.

"I had no idea you would smile so much," he told her.

By a quirk of bureaucracy -- and her own tenacious spirit -- Dabbagh did basic training three times. She wanted to enter the forces as an officer, but there were no openings, so she went in as a non-commissioned member. By the time Dabbagh completed basic training in St. Jean, Que., an officer position had opened up, so she immediately returned to re-do basic training, plus three extra weeks of officer training. Shortly before completing it, she fell from the top of the cargo net, cracking a rib and fracturing her pelvis.

After three months of recovery, she went back and did the officer training from the beginning. That's when her own family finally accepted her military life was for real, says Dabbagh.

Thus began several years of juggling civilian life -- where she continued with telemarketing, and later weather observation at the airport -- with adventures in the naval reserve. In 2006, Dabbagh took a job with the forces, training naval cadets, and she has worked with the military ever since. In 2007, she joined Operation Proteus, a small mission to Jerusalem where Canadian military personnel were helping to train Palestinian security forces, a role that made the most of her background and fluent Arabic. For the past two years, Dabbagh has been co-ordinator of the Ottawabased Future Security Analysis Directorate.

"She is a warm-hearted person, but she is also an officer who knows when to be tough," says her boss, Lt.-Col. Stefan Kostner, the unit's deputy director.

Aside from the hijab, Dabbagh's uniform varies only slightly from standard-issue. She wears a longer skirt and the shirt she wears day-today is a maternity smock, as the navy shirt was too form-fitting.

Although she didn't set out to be a pioneer, Dabbagh quickly realized that her new life came with a price: scrutiny. Upon learning she was in training for the Nijmegen March -- a four-day annual event in Holland -- an officer told Dabbagh "The admiral will want to know that!"

"Why would an admiral care if a lowly sub-lieutenant is going on this march?" she asked, only to be told "Wafa, everything you do, people want to know about it."

"I have felt like I was under the microscope a lot, and was always asking myself, 'How will that look?' You try to be yourself and do your best, but you wonder, if I make mistakes, will it be seen as representing all Muslims?"

Still, she is proud to have cleared the way for other women who want to wear the hijab and serve in the military.

"It takes somebody to do something in front of you, to know we can do everything everyone else does -- we just do it covered," says Dabbagh.

She treasures the experiences she has had -- whether it's translating for her commanding officer in Jerusalem, or standing on the bridge of a ship in the middle of the night, when the moonbeams dance across the water.

"I want the Muslim community to know the door is open for them in the Forces. My experience has been 95-per-cent positive, and if I can do it, they can do it," says Dabbagh. "And I want other Canadians to know that there are people serving Canada who are not white with blond hair and blue eyes. We are all working together, white, black, Asian, Arab, aboriginal -- and I'm one small face among them."

Earlier this year, Dabbagh was about to leave for a United Nations military observer mission in Sudan, when a routine X-ray found a spot on her lungs: cancer. She has since been doing chemotherapy and radiation while holding down her office job, and baking for her neighbours, most of whom are military families.

Never married, Dabbagh considers her neighbours her family. They recently returned her generosity by covering her entire house in Christmas lights and installing an inflatable Christmas scene on her lawn while she was out of town.

"I wish them Merry Christmas, they say, 'Happy Ramadan.' It's very sweet."

La vidéo a déclenché sur le site YouTube une avalanche de commentaires islamophobes, que les représentants de la communauté musulmane et certains experts en sécurité ont dénoncés.

«Bannissez les passagers musulmans», écrit un internaute. «Aucun musulman ne devrait avoir le droit de voler», renchérit un autre. «Restez à la maison, vous n'êtes pas les bienvenus.» «Bannissez le voile, les musulmans peuvent porter les voiles qu'ils veulent dans les trous d'où ils viennent.»

Le titre même de la vidéo laisse déjà entendre qu'Air Canada met en péril la sécurité des passagers dans le seul but de «ménager les susceptibilités musulmanes».

«C'est toujours le même cercle vicieux, s'inquiète Nermine Barbouch, du Forum musulman canadien. On part d'un incident et on dérive dans toutes sortes de débats. Ce que je trouve dangereux, c'est qu'on se fie à une vidéo de 20 secondes montrée hors contexte. On ne sait pas ce qui s'est passé juste avant. Nous créons un problème alors que les femmes voilées savent très bien qu'elles devront s'identifier et l'acceptent.»

«En vertu de la loi islamique, le voile doit être retiré lorsque la loi ou la sécurité l'exige, par exemple à la douane ou lors d'un témoignage, confirme Salam Elmenyawi, du Conseil musulman de Montréal. Je n'ai jamais entendu parler d'une musulmane qui refusait de le faire dans ces circonstances.»

Président de la firme d'enquête et de protection SIRCO, Claude Sarrazin parle d'un problème sérieux (voir autre texte) mais déplore lui aussi la tournure religieuse qu'a prise toute l'affaire. «La sécurité est au-dessus de tout ça. N'importe quelle personne mal intentionnée peut utiliser le voile comme déguisement si on accepte qu'une personne qui refuse de s'identifier passe.»

Pour cet expert, un certain «malaise» à l'égard des femmes voilées peut sans doute expliquer le contournement des règles par les agents de fouille ou de douane. Mais ce n'est pas le seul facteur.

«La sécurité est une mal-aimée, dit-il. Si un des agents s'isole avec une passagère afin de l'identifier, ça allonge passablement les files d'attente. Ce n'est pas l'idéal de faire faire ça par le transporteur alors que le passager est aussi son client. C'est lui qui a acheté le billet et le transporteur veut qu'il ait une expérience agréable.»

MONTREAL – Canadian Muslims were as surprised as anyone else that veiled women have been allowed to board flights without having to remove their face coverings.

Islamic organizations and Muslim travellers all agreed that security must trump personal freedom at all airports.

As QMI Agency reported Sunday, a British passenger posted video on Youtube showing women boarding an Air Canada flight at Montreal’s Trudeau airport with their faces covered. The federal transport department is investigating.

Nermine Barbouch of the Canadian Muslim Forum tells QMI that if there are security lapses, it’s likely the fault of the agents, not Muslims.

“As for women who wear the niqab, they never had problems identifying themselves when security is stake, whether it be at airports or anywhere else,” said Barbouch, whose umbrella group represents nine Muslim organizations across the country.

Alia Hogben, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, said she was astonished to hear that women were able to board a plane without identifying themselves.

“Normally, women who are completely veiled are brought into a small area where ... they’re asked to show their face,” she said.

That level of security was seen as completely acceptable by Muslim women who landed at Montreal's Trudeau airport Monday morning on a flight from Amman, Jordan.

“I would say they (Muslim women) have to respect the rules,” said one woman who wore a hijab, which covers the hair.

A veiled woman said she shows her face at airport security points whenever she’s asked, but with one condition.

“If there is a woman who will do the inspection, then I can,” said the passenger. “But if it’s a man, it’s against the religion. I cannot, and I would refuse.”

Security expert Claude Sarrazin said there can be no exceptions to security rules at airports, adding that passengers will have to weigh the right to express their faith with the right to travel.

“If they refuse to uncover themselves, it’s their right,” said Sarrazin, who heads up a private security firm. “But at this point, what should be done is to refuse to let them board.”

For Ottawa-based Islamic scholar Abourahman Kahin, the security breach highlights the importance of separating religious and cultural norms.

He says head-to-toe coverings are not mentioned in the Koran. He adds that Canadian law must be paramount at airports.

“It’s crucial to show one’s face when passing through security,” said Kahin, who also fears that the breach could stoke anti-Muslin sentiment.

Let us agree on this: we live in pluralistic societies and pluralism is an unavoidable fact. We are equal citizens, but with different cultural and religious backgrounds. So, how can we, instead of being obsessed with potential "conflicts of identity" within communities, change that viewpoint to define and promote a common ethical framework, nurtured by the richness of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds? After all, a pluralistic society needs a strong and effective ethics of citizenship in order to face up to both its internal challenges (diversity, equal rights, racism, corruption, etc) and international challenges (economic crisis, global warming, migrations, etc).

Here's one principle for reaching that goal: an ethics of citizenship should itself reflect the diversity of the citizenship. For while we agree that no one has the right to impose their beliefs on another, we also understand that our common life should be defined in such a way that it includes the contributions of all the religious and philosophical traditions within it. Further, the way to bring about such inclusion is through critical debate.

When it comes to the new Muslim presence in western countries, that critical debate is hard to achieve. Islam is perceived as a "problem", never as a gift in our quest for a rich and stimulating diversity. And that's a mistake. Islam has much to offer – not least when considering how individuals in politics and business have recently been behaving, within the limits of the law, but with a clear lack of ethics.Individual responsiblity, political intrgrity –

Islamic literature is full of injunctions about the centrality of an education based on ethics and proper ends. Individual responsibility, when it comes to communicating, learning and teaching is central to the Islamic message. Muslims are expected to be "witnesses to their message before people", which means speaking in a decent way, preventing cheating and corruption, and respecting the environment. Integrity in politics and the rejection of usurious speculation in economics are principles that are pushing Muslim citizens and scholars to explore new avenues that bring public life and interpersonal ethics together.

More broadly, the Muslim presence should be perceived as positive, too. It is not undermining the Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian ethical and cultural roots of Europe. Neither is it introducing dogmatism into the debate, as if spiritual and religious traditions automatically draw on authoritarian sources. They can operate within both the limits of the law and in the open public sphere. On the contrary, the Muslim presence can play a critical role in thinking about our future and shaping a new common narrative. It can help recall and revive some of the fundamental principles upon which the cultures of Europe are based.

To put it another way, Muslims remind their fellow citizens that one cannot simply get rid of older ethical traditions and replace them with a supposedly neutral rule of law or by impartial values formed in a free market. To agree on the rule of law, equality and democratic transparency is surely not enough. Contemporary crises within societies, and at the international level, remind us we need more ethics in our public life, not merely more efficiency.

Whether we can agree on the content of a common ethic is another question entirely. But this is where critical and indepth debates should take place, and it's in this way that the issue of our plural future together should be determined. That future cannot be shaped by superficial discussions of national identity, values or Britishness. Similarly, we must stop treating diversity as a hindrance, for it should be exactly the opposite. Rather, an ethics based on our common citizenship must be forged from a serious and profound engagement with the meaning of our common humanity.

London, England (CNN) -- Think of the origins of that staple of modern life, the cup of coffee, and Italy often springs to mind.

But in fact, Yemen is where the ubiquitous brew has its true origins.

Along with the first university, and even the toothbrush, it is among surprising Muslim inventions that have shaped the world we live in today.

The origins of these fundamental ideas and objects -- the basis of everything from the bicycle to musical scales -- are the focus of "1001 Inventions," a book celebrating "the forgotten" history of 1,000 years of Muslim heritage.

"There's a hole in our knowledge, we leap frog from the Renaissance to the Greeks," professor Salim al-Hassani, Chairman of the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, and editor of the book told CNN.

"1001 Inventions" is now an exhibition at London's Science Museum. Hassani hopes the exhibition will highlight the contributions of non-Western cultures -- like the Muslim empire that once covered Spain and Portugal, Southern Italy and stretched as far as parts of China -- to present day civilization.

Here Hassani shares his top 10 outstanding Muslim inventions:

1. Surgery

Around the year 1,000, the celebrated doctor Al Zahrawi published a 1,500 page illustrated encyclopedia of surgery that was used in Europe as a medical reference for the next 500 years. Among his many inventions, Zahrawi discovered the use of dissolving cat gut to stitch wounds -- beforehand a second surgery had to be performed to remove sutures. He also reportedly performed the first caesarean operation and created the first pair of forceps.

2. Coffee

Now the Western world's drink du jour, coffee was first brewed in Yemen around the 9th century. In its earliest days, coffee helped Sufis stay up during late nights of devotion. Later brought to Cairo by a group of students, the coffee buzz soon caught on around the empire. By the 13th century it reached Turkey, but not until the 16th century did the beans start boiling in Europe, brought to Italy by a Venetian trader.

3. Flying machine

"Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real attempt to construct a flying machine and fly," said Hassani. In the 9th century he designed a winged apparatus, roughly resembling a bird costume. In his most famous trial near Cordoba in Spain, Firnas flew upward for a few moments, before falling to the ground and partially breaking his back. His designs would undoubtedly have been an inspiration for famed Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci's hundreds of years later, said Hassani.

4. University

In 859 a young princess named Fatima al-Firhi founded the first degree-granting university in Fez, Morocco. Her sister Miriam founded an adjacent mosque and together the complex became the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. Still operating almost 1,200 years later, Hassani says he hopes the center will remind people that learning is at the core of the Islamic tradition and that the story of the al-Firhi sisters will inspire young Muslim women around the world today.

5. Algebra

The word algebra comes from the title of a Persian mathematician's famous 9th century treatise "Kitab al-Jabr Wa l-Mugabala" which translates roughly as "The Book of Reasoning and Balancing." Built on the roots of Greek and Hindu systems, the new algebraic order was a unifying system for rational numbers, irrational numbers and geometrical magnitudes. The same mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi, was also the first to introduce the concept of raising a number to a power.

6. Optics

"Many of the most important advances in the study of optics come from the Muslim world," says Hassani. Around the year 1000 Ibn al-Haitham proved that humans see objects by light reflecting off of them and entering the eye, dismissing Euclid and Ptolemy's theories that light was emitted from the eye itself. This great Muslim physicist also discovered the camera obscura phenomenon, which explains how the eye sees images upright due to the connection between the optic nerve and the brain.

7. Music

Muslim musicians have had a profound impact on Europe, dating back to Charlemagne tried to compete with the music of Baghdad and Cordoba, according to Hassani. Among many instruments that arrived in Europe through the Middle East are the lute and the rahab, an ancestor of the violin. Modern musical scales are also said to derive from the Arabic alphabet.

8. Toothbrush

According to Hassani, the Prophet Mohammed popularized the use of the first toothbrush in around 600. Using a twig from the Meswak tree, he cleaned his teeth and freshened his breath. Substances similar to Meswak are used in modern toothpaste.

9. The crank

Many of the basics of modern automatics were first put to use in the Muslim world, including the revolutionary crank-connecting rod system. By converting rotary motion to linear motion, the crank enables the lifting of heavy objects with relative ease. This technology, discovered by Al-Jazari in the 12th century, exploded across the globe, leading to everything from the bicycle to the internal combustion engine.

10. Hospitals

"Hospitals as we know them today, with wards and teaching centers, come from 9th century Egypt," explained Hassani. The first such medical center was the Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital, founded in 872 in Cairo. Tulun hospital provided free care for anyone who needed it -- a policy based on the Muslim tradition of caring for all who are sick. From Cairo, such hospitals spread around the Muslim world.

The award was presented to Mr. Yeboah on January 18th, by Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay and the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Committee of Montreal. Mr. Yeboah was recognized for his outstanding work in coordinating the Open Mosques project among local mosques, to help foster bridges of cooperation, understanding and social harmony in the Montreal community.

“It is an honour to see a young member of our community awarded for his efforts,” stated Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “Mr. Yeboah presents a fine example for all our youth, dedicated to positive contribution and civic engagement.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award is presented each year to individuals in Montreal who best exemplify Dr. King’s ideals. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated each year on the third Monday of January.

Depuis trois ou quatre années, il est devenu courant de lire et d’entendre des opinions qui prennent ouvertement parti contre le principe de laïcité au Québec.

Un nombre d’individus particulièrement actifs et féroces tentent de saper les fondements de la neutralité religieuse de l’État québécois en tentant d’y substituer le principe de l’activisme athée : ce sont les intégristes de la laïcité.

Les intégristes de la laïcité ne considèrent pas qu’un juif servant dans la police et portant une kippa ou qu’un hindou enturbanné sont des symboles plus que réussis d’intégration et la marque suprême du service envers leurs concitoyens.

Non, pour les intégristes laïcs, c’est du prosélytisme. Bien que ces gens soient prêts à donner leur vie pour leur pays, les intégristes laïcs nous racontent que ces concitoyens aux croyances différentes des leurs constituent une menace pour notre société.

Les intégristes laïcs préfèrent croire qu’une femme portant le hijab se servira de son poste dans un emploi dans l’administration publique pour

«islamiser» le pays que de faire face à la réalité : une telle femme servira son pays et contribuera au bien-être économique de sa famille, un point c’est tout.

La solution des intégristes laïcs pour intégrer les croyants dans la société québécoise est de les exclure volontairement et systématiquement s’ils ne veulent pas abandonner des facettes de leur religion qu’ils considèrent fondamentales et qui ne causent aucun problème réel autre que de créer de la paranoïa chez nos intégristes laïcs.

Ainsi, les intégristes laïcs veulent modifier le principe de laïcité au Québec, et derrière leur agenda moral de protection de la société et de nos institutions se cache le projet de faire disparaître toute trace de christianisme, de judaïsme, d’islamisme, de bouddhisme ou d’hindouisme pour que règne l’athéisme.

Les intégristes laïcs ne sont pas satisfaits de la liberté de croire ou de ne pas croire. Ils veulent que l’État québécois devienne un instrument d’exclusion d’autrui au service de leur volonté d’annihiler toute trace de religion de notre société. «Que les croyants se cachent» est leur devise.

Ces gens intolérants et ignorants constituent le réel danger pour notre laïcité et pour le bon vivre ensemble, et non les juifs, les musulmans, les chrétiens ou les hindous qui veulent servir leur pays et continuer de vivre leur religion dans la paix.

À l’intolérance et au fanatisme des intégristes laïcs, il faut répondre par le droit et la raison.

Le ministre fédéral de la Citoyenneté et de l'Immigration, Jason Kenney, estime que le port de la burqa relève de la liberté personnelle et qu'il ne revient pas au gouvernement de légiférer sur les vêtements que portent les Canadiens.

Après son collègue de la Justice, Rob Nicholson, qui disait ne pas vouloir modifier les lois en ce sens, le ministre Kenney a à son tour indiqué, lundi, qu'il s'agissait d'un choix personnel.

«Je crois que nous avons au Canada une tradition de liberté personnelle (...) Je suis contre l'idée que l'Etat doive réglementer les vêtements des citoyens canadiens, qui sont des gens libres», a soutenu le ministre, lors d'un point de presse, à Ottawa.

Le débat sur le port de ce voile intégral a été relancé depuis qu'un rapport déposé par une mission parlementaire, la semaine dernière en France, a proposé son interdiction dans les services publics.

Le sort de la burqa n'est toutefois pas encore jeté dans l'Hexagone car le premier ministre, François Fillon, a demandé au Conseil d'Etat d'étudier les possibles solutions juridiques qui lui permettraient d'interdire ce voile.

Au pays, le Muslim Canadian Congress demande au gouvernement fédéral de suivre l'exemple de la France, mais l'idée n'a pas été chaudement accueillie par le gouvernement de Stephen Harper.

La burqa est un vêtement islamique très répandu en Afghanistan, qui couvre l'ensemble du corps et comportant une grille tissée à la hauteur des yeux qui permet aux femmes de voir sans toutefois être vues.

Le chef libéral, Michael Ignatieff, s'est de son côté prononcé contre son interdiction, en plaidant la liberté de religion.

Mais pour certains militants, le port de la burqa n'est pas une question de croyance, mais plutôt de politique, et il ne relèverait donc pas de la Charte des droits et libertés.

Le ministre Kenney a par ailleurs rappelé que la dernière version du guide de citoyenneté du Canada, publié en novembre, établissait l'égalité entre les hommes et les femmes.

Le document, intitulé «Découvrir le Canada: les droits et responsabilité s liés à la citoyenneté», note que «l'ouverture et la générosité du Canada excluent les pratiques culturelles barbares qui tolèrent la violence conjugale, les meurtres d'honneur, la mutilation sexuelle des femmes ou d'autres actes de violence fondée sur le sexe».

«Donc nous sommes très clairs que certaines pratiques soi-disant culturelles ne sont pas acceptables au Canada», a fait valoir le ministre.

«Mais en bout de ligne, c'est un pays de liberté personnelle» et il n'est pas question pour le gouvernement d'imposer aux «gens (ce qu'ils) doivent porter», a-t-il conclu.

Après plus de cinq ans d’attente, le Département d’Etat américain a pris la décision, dans un document signé par la Secrétaire d’Etat Hillary Clinton, de ne plus considérer comme recevables les raisons qui m’empêchaient d’entrer aux Etats-Unis.

Comme le relève l’Union américaine pour la défense des droits civils (ACLU) – qui, avec les institutions American Academy for Religion, American Association of University Professors et PEN American Center, a poursuivi le Gouvernement américain - il s’agit d’une victoire majeure pour les libertés civiles aux Etats-Unis. Sous l’Administration Bush, les exclusions de professeurs et d’intellectuels s’étaient multipliées sous des prétextes fallacieux et de fausses raisons de sécurité. La nouvelle Administration Obama montre ainsi une volonté de s’ouvrir au monde à nouveau et de permettre les débats critiques.

Après près de six ans de recherches et d’investigations, l’ordre donné par la Secrétaire d’Etat Hillary Clinton, vient confirmer ce que j’avais dit et répété depuis le premier jour : les premières accusations de liens avec le terrorisme (qui furent ensuite écartées), puis les donations à des organisations de solidarité en faveur des Palestiniens, n’étaient que des prétextes pour m’empêcher d’exprimer mes critiques quant à la politique du gouvernement américain sur son sol. Cette décision met enfin un terme à une période récente assez sombre de la politique américaine qui a consisté, au nom de la sécurité, à empêcher la critique et les débats à coup d’exclusion et de stigmatisation infondées.

Je suis heureux aujourd’hui de cette décision de mettre un terme à mon exclusion des Etats Unis après presque six ans. Je n’ai jamais confondu le gouvernement américain (et notamment l’Administration Bush) avec la société civile, les institutions académiques et les intellectuels. Je tiens à remercier toutes les institutions et les individus qui m’ont soutenu et qui ont travaillé pendant des années pour mettre un terme à cette exclusion idéologique anticonstitutionnelle. J’espère qu’il sera possible bientôt de visiter les Etats-Unis et de pouvoir à nouveau m’engager dans un débat ouvert, critique et constructif avec les universitaires et les intellectuels américains.

C’est une étape importante dans mon engagement dans le dialogue entre les civilisations, les religions, les peuples et les consciences. Le vrai dialogue est forcément critique, politique et idéologique et rien ne doit empêcher les opinions de s’exprimer et de débattre. Je n’ai jamais cessé de le faire et je ne cesserai point. D’autres gouvernements – en Orient – m’excluent encore de leur territoire et m’interdisent de m’exprimer librement : il faut saluer les progrès aux Etats Unis – tout en restant vigilant et critique sur les avancées effectives de la politique américaine – et il importe de continuer à résister à toute tentative d’intimidation par l’exclusion, la menace, la diffamation ou la calomnie.

La route est longue. Il est des victoires significatives qui redonnent de la force. Celle-ci en est une qui rappelle - à celles et ceux qui ont fait usage de cette exclusion pour me calomnier ou me stigmatiser de façon mensongère et/ou cynique – qu’on ne gagne le débats des idées qu’avec des idées et que la dignité d’une cause finit toujours par avoir, d’une façon ou d’une autre, gain de cause.

A place de résistance for newcomersQuebec needs the labour of immigrants, but is slow to fully integrate them

MONTREAL–Doggedly determined to succeed, Mounia Oulias makes a near-daily trek to a strip-mall immigrant settlement agency to use its aging computers to try to find a job.

For three months, the secretary by training from Morocco has been doing the same thing.

She hasn't even had one reply.

"Of course, I didn't think they would roll out the red carpet for me," Oulias says with a shy smile. "But I didn't think it would be this difficult."

As Oulias is beginning to discover, among the provinces that receive the most immigrants – Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec – she has chosen the most challenging one in which to try to integrate.

A Star analysis of Quebec's performance in a number of key areas, globally viewed as indicators of integration, suggests this province faces daunting gaps between its intentions and the reality newcomers experience in finding their place in the workforce and life in general.

What critics describe as a "systemic resistance to diversity" persists despite the fact that Quebec is facing serious labour shortages and there are more government programs than ever before to address the problems.

Among the indicators that show the province is falling short:

Economic: Recent immigrants here face higher unemployment rates than Ontario or B.C., especially those from francophone countries in North Africa.
Political: Representation of visible minorities in major institutions such as the police, civil service, school boards and trade unions is far below population figures.
Cultural: The populace exhibits greater wariness toward new immigrants and their customs.
Last year, the province examined the so-called "reasonable accommodation" of minorities, especially religious ones, after controversies in 2007 raised alarm that Quebecers' values were threatened.

While experts point to signs of integration – Montreal is less ethnically segregated at the neighbourhood level than other Canadian cities – Quebec businesses are still reluctant to hire foreigners, and even laws meant to provide equal access aren't making much difference.

"It's so sad: is everyone asleep?" Ana Campagna pleads. "Do we not realize the entire economic development of Quebec is tied to immigration?"

Campagna, executive director of Centre Génération Emploi, a job and integration agency, says if there isn't movement on all dimensions of integration "then you're setting up a marginalization."

Fo Niemi, executive director of Montreal's Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations, points to a "systemic resistance to diversity."

Immigration is rapidly increasing in Quebec. The province will accept about 55,000 newcomers in 2010. Just two years ago, it was around 45,000. Meanwhile, its face is changing. While 30 per cent are now considered "ethnocultural" minorities (non-French Canadian), 8.8 per cent are visible minorities (non-white). That proportion jumps to 26 per cent in Montreal.

Native Quebecers' relationship to new immigrants is more complicated than elsewhere in Canada.

Scholars note immigration is concentrated in Montreal so most Quebecers have little experience with it, the francophone majority is quite homogenous, and there is an eternal fear that its identity and language are vulnerable.

"So the majority is always more worried than the majority in Toronto or Vancouver," says sociologist Annick Germain, director of the Metropolis Centre, which studies immigration.

Quebecers in positions of power are nevertheless apt to defend the current state of affairs.

Statistics Canada has analyzed labour force data and found Quebec fares worse than Ontario or B.C. on immigrant unemployment.

The immigration and cultural communities minister cautions against comparing Quebec to these provinces. "Our model of integration is completely different," Yolande James tells the Star. The fact that in the longer term the jobless picture brightens, she adds, "shows very clearly there is a process in place that's completely normal."

The assumption that language is the biggest barrier to immigrants finding jobs also appears untrue, since the jobless rate for French-speaking allophones, such as those from the Maghreb, hovers above 20 per cent. James, conceding it's "something that worries us enormously," maintains that "learning the language is key to integrating in Quebec, but it's not the only thing."

To be sure, Quebec immigrants face similar challenges to those in other provinces. The struggle to have qualifications recognized is one example. Ahmed, 51, a newcomer from Algeria, is an accountant who has spent five months looking for a job. He's given up trying to enter the professional order of accountants since he'd have to "redo all my studies." But finding a job even somewhat related is proving difficult, he says, because he lacks Quebec experience.

There are signs, however, that immigrants face higher hurdles here in terms of getting a foot in the door. The Star has found the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, has no visible minority in its management. Neither do the major trade unions, such as the Confédération des syndicats nationaux and the La Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec.

Michel Leblanc, president of the board of trade, which has 7,000 individual and 3,000 company members, says the organization is not meant to be a "statistical representation of the map" but rather a place for business leaders.

As ethnic groups establish themselves, business success will follow, he says. "We're trying to track them and promote them," he says. "It's just a matter of time."

The board has implemented, with James's ministry, what many are calling a successful program, "World on our Doorstep," matching immigrants with companies for internships that last a few days.

In other institutions such as the Montreal police, and especially Quebec's provincial force, the Sûreté du Québec, visible minorities are severely under-represented.

The Quebec Human Rights Commission released a report in April following up on a 2001 law designed to promote equal access in public institutions to groups historically discriminated against. Eight years on, "visible minorities are poorly represented in all public bodies," the report said. It also noted general "resistance" to meaningful measures to address the problem.

The commission criticized the Sûreté du Québec for a "near absence of visible minorities among the police personnel." The level was just 0.4 per cent. Minorities are also markedly under-represented in the civil service.

Marie-Thérèse Chicha, an economist at the University of Montreal, has studied employment equity in Quebec, and found most firms that took action on diversity had headquarters in Toronto or the U.S. "I'd say there is a lot of prejudice," she says. "People want to work with people they resemble, and hire those with the same profile."

Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Association for Canadian Studies, said French Canadians' history means they have a built-in network, a "solidarity," he calls it, that can be tough for others to penetrate.

Quebec's Intercultural Relations Council surveyed businesses and this summer reported that though many said they were open to diverse hiring, "the number of practices that would make that possible was kind of disconnected," said its president, Patricia Rimok.

"In Toronto it was the business sector that took the lead, in Quebec it's the government," she adds.

As it happens, other English entities do better than their French counterparts in terms of diversity.

The level of representation of visible minorities in English school boards, according to the Human Rights Commission, is 4.3 per cent, compared to just 1.7 per cent in French school boards.

"I don't like these comparisons because it's not the language you speak that will determine your capacity to be open" to immigrants, says James, Quebec's first black cabinet minister.

Businesses, school boards, and Quebecers in general are "very welcoming and open. If you ask me, `Does discrimination exist?' the answer is yes, as it does elsewhere. It's our responsibility to be vigilant."

The complex relationship Quebecers have with newcomers also means they are more demanding of immigrants than other Canadians to drop their customs for those of the majority, polls consistently show. The province has instituted a controversial new policy forcing immigrants to sign a declaration accepting Quebec's "common values," which state, for example, that speaking French is a necessity, and that men and women are equal.

Quebec's Liberal government has launched more programs aimed at integration than any previous one. It recently ran an ad campaign that stated Quebec's future couldn't be written without immigration.

"We don't say diversity is good because it's politically correct to say it," James declares. "It's because we really believe it."

An immigrant like Mounia Oulias can only hope that attitude trickles down to whomever eventually decides to hire her.

C’est passé inaperçu, ou presque, parce que la série a été publiée entre Noël et le Jour de l’an : le Toronto Star s’est penché sur le rapport entre le Québec et les immigrants, trois ans après le début de la crise des accommodements raisonnables. Et si un mot peut résumer cette relation, c’est celui-ci : malaise.

Quand on traite d’immigration et de minorités, depuis quelques années, c’est principalement sous la lorgnette du Québécois de souche. Comment se sent le Québécois devant les cabanes à sucre qui se plient aux demandes des immigrants ? Que pense la Québécoise de la musulmane portant le voile ? Et quelles sont les formes bizarres des cauchemars particuliers des gens d’Hérouxville ?

Le journaliste Andrew Chung (transparence totale : Andrew, « bureau chief » du Star pour le Québec, travaille de La Presse) regarde la problématique de l’autre côté, celui de l’immigrant. Le premier papier de la série s’attarde à ce qui est probablement le meilleur critère d’intégration dans une société : le travail. Or, note Chung, se trouver un job quand on est immigrant, au Québec, est difficile. Bien sûr, on peut dire que c’est difficile de se trouver un job pour n’importe quel immigrant qui débarque dans n’importe quel pays. Mais pourquoi est-ce plus difficile pour un nouvel arrivant de se trouver un job au Québec qu’en Ontario ou en Colombie-Britannique ? Parce que c’est bel et bien le cas. Dans toutes les catégories d’immigrants (arrivé depuis moins de cinq ans ; entre cinq et dix ans et plus de dix ans), le Québec affiche un taux de chômage supérieur à celui de la Colombie-Britannique et de l’Ontario. Pourquoi ?

Bien sûr, on dira que la langue est une difficulté supplémentaire pour l’immigrant. Mais pourquoi est-ce que les Maghrébins souffrent d’un taux de chômage plus de deux fois supérieur à la moyenne, à 20 % (taux de chômage au Québec : 8,5%). ? Ils parlent français, très majoritairement.

Ces chiffres ne sont pas, en soi, une révélation. Le magazine L’actualité – désolé, j’ai fouillé en vain pour trouver un hyperlien – a posé la question « Sommes-nous racistes ? », en mai 2006, en démontrant qu’à formation égale à celle des « pures laines », Noirs et Maghrébins souffraient de taux de chômage bien plus élevés. Ce n’est pas une révélation, donc, mais cette fois, c’est un journal torontois qui nous remet ça sur le nez.

Quelque part dans sa série, Andrew Chung mentionne que 30% de la population est d’origine non-pure laine. Sauf que quand on regarde les centres de pouvoir, d’influence et de représentation de la société québécoise, ça ne paraît pas. Police, conseils municipaux, fonction publique, leaders syndicaux, chambres de commerce, acteurs de téléromans, lecteurs de nouvelles, « stars » de téléréalité : c’est blanc, catholique, de souche, Tremblay-Gagnon-Côté-Roy à l’os. Mon camarade Yves Boisvert s’est penché sur cette réalité – occultée – récemment, dans Retour à la cabane à sucre.

Pourquoi ?

Pour reprendre le vieux réflexe individuel au chapitre collectif : « Nous ne sommes pas racistes, mais… »

C’est une boutade, je ne dis pas que nous, Québécois, sommes racistes. Mais je regarde les chiffres et il y a quelque chose de pas net dans notre rapport collectif aux « étranges ».

Qu'est-ce que ça m'enlève qu'une femme avec un foulard ou un homme avec un turban ou une kippa me réponde au comptoir gouvernemental?

Mon fils a été examiné par une chirurgienne portant le foulard, l'an dernier. J'en déduis que celle-là n'est pas sous le joug d'un mari obscurantiste qui veut la confiner à des tâches domestiques. Comme nous l'a appris la commission Bouchard-Taylor, chez la minorité de musulmanes qui portent le foulard, les motifs varient considérablement.

Mais en quoi est-ce que cela me regarde?

Alors, pourquoi ce monsieur Robichaud capote-t-il parce qu'une femme avec un foulard sur la tête le reçoit au bureau de la SAAQ? Il ne veut pas être servi par une femme portant le foulard? Très bien, monsieur, retournez faire la queue et attendez comme tout le monde.

Il veut dénoncer l'accommodement fait à certaines minorités religieuses, certaines pour être photographiées par une femme, d'autres pour passer un test avec un homme.

Il a raison. On n'a pas à se plier aux sexismes religieux. Que ceux dont la religion dicte de ne pas passer de test avec une femme refassent la queue ou reviennent un autre jour. C'est leur problème.

Mais il n'y a pas, à l'inverse, de droit à ne pas voir de signes religieux.

Que disait Bouchard-Taylor? Fermeté sur les principes fondamentaux, flexibilité dans l'application.

Le principe en cause, ici, c'est l'égalité des sexes. «Cette valeur disqualifie, en principe, toutes les demandes ayant pour effet d'accorder à la femme un statut inférieur à celui de l'homme», disait le fameux rapport.

Le port du foulard n'accorde pas un statut juridique inférieur à la femme. Oui, je sais bien, toutes les grandes religions sont profondément sexistes. Mais la liberté de religion, pour exister, suppose que la majorité ne se mette pas à juger du contenu des autres religions. Permettra-t-on aux fonctionnaires de refuser l'examen à un prêtre, vu que la religion catholique est sexiste?

Vues de l'extérieur, les religions des autres sont toujours un tissu de superstitions et de rites insensés. Mais pour celui ou celle qui l'affiche, ce signe a un sens profond. Si la liberté de culte veut dire quelque chose, qu'on lui fiche la paix.

Fort bien, nous dit maintenant le PQ (René Lévesque, où êtes-vous?), mais s'il est un employé de l'État, il doit cacher ce signe. C'est la laïcité à la française.

Il se trouve qu'ici, on a parié plutôt sur la laïcité «ouverte». L'État est neutre, l'individu est libre. Donc, les filles peuvent porter le foulard, les garçons la kippa à l'école publique. Et les employés de l'État ont le droit de porter certains signes religieux.

Cela exclurait évidemment la burqa. On ne se voile pas le visage quand on représente l'État. Cela exclurait aussi les signes des représentants de l'ordre, disait Bouchard-Taylor (juges, procureurs, policiers).

La Cour suprême et le turban? Attention aux légendes urbaines. Elle a rendu UN jugement sur le turban, en 1985, et c'était pour donner raison au CN contre un sikh qui refusait de porter le casque de sécurité. Dans le cas de la GRC, c'est le corps de police, de son propre chef, qui a donné la permission aux sikhs. Des policiers retraités ont attaqué cette décision en Cour fédérale, sans succès: on ne peut pas empêcher l'État de donner «trop» de droits à une minorité. La Cour suprême a refusé d'entendre l'affaire. Que dirait la Cour aujourd'hui? Pas si sûr. L'an dernier, un juge ontarien a rejeté la demande d'un sikh qui voulait faire de la moto avec son turban plutôt qu'un casque.

Cet été, la Cour suprême a rejeté la demande d'un groupe d'huttérites de l'Alberta qui refusaient d'avoir leur photo sur leur permis de conduire. Eh oui, il y a des limites.

Pendant ce temps-là, on oublie les vraies histoires, celles de musulmanes brillantes et formées dans nos universités qui ne se trouvent pas d'emploi du seul fait de leur origine - même sans foulard. Le sous-emploi chronique des immigrants surqualifiés est passablement plus grave que ces niaiseries de files d'attente qui nous rappellent ces fausses histoires de cabanes à sucre hallal...

Le problème de la fonction publique, ce ne sont pas les accommodements. C'est la sous-représentation chronique des minorités. Mais on ne fera pas une commission avec ça, n'est-ce pas?

CAIR-CAN calls on the Hamilton Police to ensure that this incident is investigated swiftly and that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

In a statement released today, CAIR-CAN said:

"An attack on any place of worship is deeply offensive and hurtful. Islam promotes social justice, peaceful relations and understanding with our neighbours - both Muslims and non-Muslims. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the small fire caused only minor damage, but the scale of damage that might have resulted from such an attack is alarming,” said Ihsaan Gardee, CAIR-CAN Executive Director.

"CAIR-CAN is encouraged by reports that Hamilton police hate crime investigators have been called. Our organization calls on politicians and security officials in Hamilton to demonstrate leadership by standing firm against all forms of hate, racism and xenophobia. Such cowardly acts of vandalism, regardless of their scope, represent not only an attempt to cause physical damage but an attempt to divide communities by targeting visible and vulnerable minorities.”

“While deeply disturbing, CAIR-CAN does not believe that such incidents represent the sentiments of the vast majority of Canadians, which is why we ask our fellow citizens of conscience to join us in condemning this regrettable act.”

“We also urge mosque leaders and officials to remain vigilant and to immediately report suspicious behaviour to CAIR-CAN and the proper authorities, in order to establish a clear record of such incidents.”

(TORONTO, Canada – Dec 21, 2009) – The 8th annual Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) convention returns in Toronto with Yusuf Islam, popularly known as Cat Stevens, and 17 000 attendees between Dec 25 to 27. Former 70s pop star, Yusuf Islam will make his first live Canadian appearance in 10 years.

Two dozen other leading intellectuals, professors and community workers will also address the audience, including Hamza Yusuf, founder of American’s first Muslim college, and Prof. Tariq Ramadan, named by Time as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. Comedy group “Allah Made Me Funny” will also perform. Attendees are expected from across Canada and the US.

: Shani Smith says a security guard at a Citibank branch told her she could not conduct transactions unless she removed her hijab.

A Chicago woman says she was hassled by a security guard when she walked into a bank, because of something she was wearing. CBS 2's Anne State reports that the Council on American-Islamic Relations says it's considering a lawsuit.

The group says the woman deserves an apology.

Shani Smith says she is a recent convert to Islam. When she prays, she asks for guidance to walk the straight path. She says her faith helped her handle a tough situation at a Citibank at west 79th Street and Damen Avenue.

Smith says she was humiliated.

"I was hurt. I sat in my car and cried," she said.

Smith says she was wearing a hijab. She wore a brown hoodie to cover her neck. In her religion, she says, modesty is important. She says the bank security guard got angry with her.

"He said, 'I'm sorry, you can't do any transactions here, ma'am, unless you remove your head gear.' And I said, 'excuse me?'" Smith said.

Smith says a bank employee still waited on her. She was not required to remove her hood. But she says the guard kept yelling the entire time. He allegedly said, "Don't pull the religious card."

"Everyone was really shocked," Smith said.

A statement from Citibank said they are "…committed to treating customers with service that is respectful and responsive. We do not condone discrimination within our business."

It also says Citibank security guards generally will ask customers to remove their hoods upon entering a branch for security reasons, but "under no circumstances would a customer be required to remove religious attire. We regret any inconvenience Ms. Smith experienced."

Good enough?

Smith laughed and said, "no." She thinks the guard needs sensitivity training.

Christian hotelier 'abused' Muslim guest

A Muslim woman was asked by a Christian hotelier if she was a terrorist and a murderer because she was wearing Islamic dress, a court has been told.

Ericka Tazi told Liverpool magistrates she faced a tirade of abuse from Benjamin Vogelenzang and his wife Sharon, at their hotel on Merseyside.

She said it was because she was wearing a hijab head covering and gown.

Mr and Mrs Vogelenzang deny using threatening, abusive or insulting words which were religiously aggravated.

Members of campaign group The Christian Institute demonstrated in support of the couple outside the court.

Mrs Tazi, who converted to Islam 18 months ago, spent a month at The Bounty House Hotel on Church Avenue, Aintree, Liverpool, while attending a course at Aintree Hospital.

Clothes 'mocked'

Prosecutor Anya Horwood told the court Mr Vogelenzang, 53, called the prophet Mohammed a "warlord" and likened him to Saddam Hussein and Hitler.

And his 54-year-old wife told Mrs Tazi her Islamic dress represented "oppression" and was a form of "bondage", the court heard.

Mrs Tazi had worn European dress during her four-week stay, but the row flared after she came down on her last day in traditional Islamic dress.

She said Mr Vogelenzang asked her "Why are you wearing those clothes?" and began laughing at her, the prosecutor told the court.

Ms Horwood said the hotelier then began to discuss his Christian faith but became angry - at which point his wife joined in.

"[Mrs Vogelenzang] was saying that the clothes she was wearing represented oppression and bondage," she said.

Mrs Tazi walked away but was followed by Mr Vogelenzang, who was acting like "a whirling dervish", repeatedly asking her if she was a "terrorist".

"She asked the couple to stop insulting her. She tried to explain again how important her faith was," Ms Horwood added.

"At that point Sharon Vogelenzang pointed her finger in her face, shouting, saying she had provoked this because of wearing the gown."

The trial continues.

Brossard le 19 Novembre 2009- La population de Brossard est invitée à donner généreusement du sang à l’occasion de la collecte organisée par le Forum Musulman Canadien (FMC-CMF), le centre communautaire islamique CCI-ICC et Héma-Québec qui aura lieu le samedi 21 novembre prochain. La collecte se déroulera au centre communautaire islamique CCI-ICC, 5905, boul. Grande-Allée, à Brossard. Les donnateurs sont attendus entre 10 h et 16 h.

L’équipe d’Héma -Québec et les bénévoles seront sur place afin d’accueillir les donneurs. Rappelons que le maintien de la réserve collective des Québécois repose sur l’engagement de la communauté et des donneurs qui contribuent au bien-être des malades.

Il importe de savoir qu’il n’y a aucun risque de contracter une maladie en donnant du sang, car tout le matériel utilisé pour effectuer le prélèvement est neuf, stérile et détruit après usage. Avant d'être livré aux centres hospitaliers, chaque don de sang est systématiquement analysé et soumis à des tests de dépistage pour les maladies transmissibles par transfusion sanguine.

Tous les jours, il importe que les personnes en santé prennent un peu de leur temps pour partager ce qu'elles ont de plus précieux : leur sang. Au Québec, toutes les 80 secondes, une personne a besoin de sang. Les donneurs sont des héros anonymes, car on ne le répètera jamais trop, donner du sang, c’est donner la vie!

Un guide bien fait

Le nouveau guide à l'intention des immigrants est dans l'ensemble très bien fait. Le ton a la neutralité qui sied à un document officiel - le paragraphe sur la souveraineté est un modèle d'objectivité - mais curieusement, la mention dont on a le plus parlé (celle qui interdit les pratiques «barbares» contre les femmes) semble avoir été écrite par un autre rédacteur.
«L'ouverture et la générosité du Canada excluent les pratiques culturelles barbares qui tolèrent la violence conjugale, les meurtres d'honneur, la mutilation sexuelle des femmes...»

L'idée est excellente, mais pas le texte.
Primo: ce n'est pas parce le Canada est «ouvert et généreux» qu'il interdit l'excision et les crimes d'honneur. C'est parce qu'il souscrit aux grands principes des démocraties libérales et aux droits humains fondamentaux. En faire une question de «générosité», c'est tomber dans le sentimentalisme le plus niais.
Deuzio: le mot «barbare» n'a pas sa place dans un texte officiel qui se veut neutre (et qui doit l'être). Ce mot a trop de connotations historiques et émotionnelles. Il suffirait de dire que le Canada considère ces pratiques «condamnables» ou «totalement inacceptables».
Tertio: pourquoi parler de «mutilation sexuelle», alors qu'il s'agit de mutilation génitale?
Quarto: la violence conjugale est certes répréhensible, mais appartient à une autre catégorie. Ce n'est pas une «pratique culturelle», c'est une tare qui existe dans toutes les cultures - y compris chez les Canadiens de vieille souche.
Cela dit, l'initiative du gouvernement Harper arrive à point nommé. Le Québec devrait l'imiter. Pourquoi, d'ailleurs, se limiter à l'excision et aux meurtres d'honneur? Il serait parfaitement légitime que nos gouvernements avertissent solennellement les nouveaux arrivants que la polygamie est tout aussi condamnable. (Cette affaire est compliquée, car la cause des polygames de Bountiful, en Colombie-Britannique, risque de recevoir l'aval de la Cour suprême au nom de la liberté religieuse. Mais pourquoi ne pas envisager à ce sujet le recours à la clause dérogatoire?)
Le gouvernement pourrait aussi, dans la même veine, interdire à tout citoyen de se masquer le visage (ne pas confondre avec l'inoffensif foulard islamique) sauf pour des raisons médicales. Il ne s'agirait pas de cibler seulement les niqabs et les burqas, mais d'interdire aussi les cagoules. C'est le genre de législation qui serait parfaitement compatible avec un État de droit, au nom de la protection de l'ordre public.
Il y a de très bons aspects dans ce guide: l'insistance sur le fait que les droits s'accompagnent de responsabilités, le rappel de la contribution canadienne aux deux guerres mondiales (autrement plus importante que les casques bleus sur lesquels insistait le précédent guide), le respect manifesté au Québec, dont l'histoire et la spécificité sont bien exposées, le respect dû à l'histoire des trois peuples fondateurs, etc.
Par contre, on se passerait du chapelet d'excuses officielles (pensionnats autochtones, internement des Japonais, discrimination contre les Chinois, etc.), et l'on déplore le parti pris populiste qui a poussé le guide à consacrer autant d'espace à l'odyssée de Terry Fox qu'aux recherches scientifiques.
La nomenclature des artistes (où sont les écrivains?) paraît improvisée; il aurait été plus sage de ne mentionner que ceux qui, parmi les très grands, sont décédés. Enfin, le guide met beaucoup trop l'accent sur la monarchie. Et le comble de l'esprit partisan survient quand on présente une photo de la reine signant la constitution de 1982... amputée du premier ministre Trudeau (libéral!) qui est à ses côtés sur toutes les photos de l'époque. C'est d'une inadmissible grossièreté.

Le 1er décembre 2005, Mohamed Anas Bennis, un canadien d'origine marocaine âgé de 25 ans, a été tué par l'agent Yannick Bernier de la police de Montréal après la prière matinale à sa mosquée de quartier à Côte-des-Neiges. Depuis, un voile de secret entoure les circonstances qui ont mené à sa mort, alors que plusieurs des questions de la famille Bennis restent sans réponse. Le 1er décembre 2009 marquera le quatrième anniversaire de la mort d'Anas. Quatre années et toujours pas de justice!

En juin 2008, la coroner en chef du Québec, Louise Nolet, a ordonné une enquête publique sur la mort d'Anas. Bien que cette dernière ne constituait pas l'enquête publique et indépendante complète que la Coalition Justice pour Anas exigeait depuis sa formation en janvier 2007, il s'agissait toutefois une victoire importante, même partielle.

Mais en août 2008, la Fraternité des Policiers et Policières de Montréal (FPPM) déposa une requête contre la coroner Rudel-Tessier, pour laquelle les audiences doivent se poursuivre en janvier 2010. La requête vise à empêcher l'enquête publique du coroner d'avoir lieu, sous prétexte que toutes les réponses aux questions ont déjà été fournies. Mais jusqu'à maintenant, la famille n'a toujours pas reçu les réponses à de nombreuses questions: pourquoi le couteau qu'Anas aurait soi-disant utilisé (d'après la version policière de l'événement) n'a jamais fait l'objet d'une expertise? Pourquoi la vidéo de la scène n'a jamais été rendue publique? Pourquoi les agents Bernier et Roy n'ont-ils jamais été contre-interrogé s sur leurs versions des faits, contrairement à ce qu'exigerait n'importe quelle enquête criminelle sur un meurtre?

Quatre années plus tard, la famille Bennis et le public ne sont pas plus près de comprendre pourquoi Anas, décrit par ses proches comme étant une personne sensible et paisible, a été tué par la police de Montréal le matin du 1er décembre 2005. La famille Bennis n'a trouvé que du mépris de la part du gouvernement lors de ses multiples tentatives d'obtenir la seule option qui ferait lumière sur les faits: une enquête complète, publique et indépendante sur la mort d'Anas. L'importance d'une enquête publique est d'autant plus nécessaire à la lumière des récentes révélations apparues dans le cadre de l'enquête publique sur la mort de Fredy Villanueva, qui démontrent clairement qu'on ne peut pas permettre à la police d'enquêter sur elle-même.

Comme plusieurs autres, Anas est une vicime du Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). Le 1er décembre 2009, honorons sa mémoire et lançons à nouveau notre appel pour la justice. Joignez-vous à nous le 1er décembre au coin des rues Côte-des-Neiges et Kent pour dénoncer l'impunité dont jouissent les policiers et pour nous souvenir d'Anas et de toutes les victimes de meurtres policiers.

INFO ON DEAN OBEIDALLAHDean Obeidallah believes that comedy can be used to stimulate dialog and address negative stereotypes. He has done "Stand up for Peace" along with Jewish comic Scott Blakeman, as well as his one-man show, "I Come in Peace," a comedic look at his life as an Arab-American in post 9/11 America. Raised in New Jersey, Dean's comedy comes in large part from his unique background of being the son of a Palestinian father and a Sicilian mother. Dean, an award winning comedian who was at one time a practicing attorney, has appeared on Comedy Central's "Axis of Evil" Comedy special (which also aired in the Middle East on Showtime Arabia) and is the co-creator and co-producer of Comedy Central.com's critically acclaimed Internet series "The Watch List" featuring a cast of all Middle Eastern-American comedians performing stand up and sketch comedy. While it is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer, Pink Hijab Day also intended to shatter stereotypes of Muslim women, as well as raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.Interesting story of how The Pink Hijab Day came to be:Pink Hijab Day began small, in a high school in Columbia, MO. A group of girls decided to wear pink hijabs one day to encourage others to ask questions about their hijabs and about Islam. As you all know, the Hijab and Niqab debate is back again. (and will always do) But this time after the whole story of Sheikh Tantawi of Al Azhar University in Egypt and after the comments and opinions of the MCM, regarding Niqab!

I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter, be it you are for or against Niqab. You may write your comments here or e-mail them to me, like some of you did in the past.

To be allowed to enter into Gaza or not to be allowed? This is the question swirling in my mind these days as I am getting ready to travel with a Codepink delegation to Egypt and then to Gaza. Last March, I missed the opportunity to join a similar delegation mostly composed of women from all over the world who commemorated International Women’s Day with Palestinians women. They also visited this tiny territory where 1.5 millions of people, half of them children and youth, who have struggled to live through almost two years of siege and terrible ongoing war. But this time, when I knew that there was going be another attempt by the same organizers to cross the Egyptian borders to Gaza and help build a playground as well as meet with different NGOs working with children affected by depression, anxiety and mental problems caused by the war, I didn’t hesitate a second. As a mother, I think it is important for me to go there and help bring some support to the children of Gaza. It is also important to let them know that the International community cares about their plight.Unfortunately, things are not as simple and straightforward as we always wish them to be. Gaza has been closed to the world and many international delegations of medical workers, peace activists have been prevented from crossing the border in order to bring humanitarian assistance. Food aid is said to be waiting, sometimes spoiled, in warehouses at the Egyptian borders. Just last week, a ten-member Canadian delegation led by Sandra Rush, who went already to Gaza with the March delegation, arrived at the border but was prevented from crossing the border until today. Are we going to be treated similarly? I have no doubt in my mind that we should be hopeful and determined but also we should definitely keep our expectations moderate.But beyond all these questioning, hesitation and mixed feelings, one thing emerges: the objective of this delegation. Going physically to Gaza is great, meeting with children and bringing them toys and medical supplies is a noble action. But if for some reasons, we were denied entry then it is not the end of the story. One day I can say to myself and to my own children that I didn’t forget the children of Gaza and that I did my best to help. In the meantime, I have to finish my packing.

The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) is calling for a public inquiry in the Racial Profiling
(Montreal, May 26, 2009) The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) received comfortably the decision of Judge Sansfaçon, to suspend the Coroner’s inquest into the police shooting death of Montreal teen Fredy Villanueva indefinitely.
“We were not comfortable with this type of inquiry that will never address the real issue. We repeat our earlier demand which asks for a real inquiry on the entire question of Racial Profiling practices” said Mohamed S. Kamel, the president of the CMF.
The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) is reminding the Government of Quebec that if we had seriously treated the earlier killing of Mohamed Bennis, the killing of Fredy Villanueva would never have taken place.
“We urge the public security minister, M. Jacques Dupuis, to take a courageous decision and to open a public inquiry in the killing of every single person by the police, especially those that are clouded by the suspicion of Racial Profiling” added Mohamed S. Kamel, the president of the CMF.

3 Québécoises de "souche" discutent du Hijab sur 98,5 (Audio)

Sur 98,5, Isabelle Maréchal a accueilli 3 québécoises (de souche) dont deux sont musulmanes et la troisième est revenue à son catholicisme. Elles ont parlé de leurs conversions et de leurs points de vue sur le foulard.

Je me permets ici d’offrir quelques pistes de réflexion sur les questionnements qui ont eu lieu au sein de la Fédération des femmes québécoises (FFQ)[1] dernièrement, ainsi que dans la société québécoise dans son ensemble [2] autour de la proposition du Conseil du statut de la femme d’interdire le port des signes religieux ostentatoires dans la fonction publique. J’étais fort étonnée de lire les attaques faites par plusieurs groupes et journalistes québécois à l’endroit de la FFQ quant à la position prise par les membres de celle-ci concernant la proposition du Conseil du statut de la femme. Ces arbitres auto-proclamés de la femme musulmane « acceptable » se permettent non seulement de définir « l’islam acceptable » mais aussi de qualifier faussement d’islamiste toute personne qui serait être d’un avis contraire sur cette question. Certains insinuent aussi qu’à la lumière de la position adoptée par les membres de la FFQ, cette dernière a perdu la légitimité nécessaire pour défendre le droit à l’égalité des femmes au Québec. Bien que n'ayant jamais été moi-même membre de la Fédération, cette organisation a gagné ma confiance grâce aux nombreuses batailles menées au nom de la défense des droits des femmes. À cet effet, je tiens à souligner la reconnaissance opportune de la démographie changeante au Québec par la FFQ ainsi que les démarches entreprises vis-à-vis des femmes des autres communautés tant locales que globales.

I couldn’t believe what I’ am reading for I can’t believe this was the behavior of a Muslim neighbor. Not only it’s choking but at the same time, ironically enough, it made me laugh. Why laugh? It’s very simple. If you only knew, what are the teachings of Islam and of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about neighbors and respect to others…you would then be very surprised of this behavior…

This article and the readers comments gives us the impression that Muslims are not, cannot and do not want to be friendly neighbors. But quite the opposite, most if not all of the Muslims I know, here in Canada and elsewhere, they are very respectful and friendly to all of their neighbors no matter from which religious or ethnical background they are.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever believes in God and the Last Day, let him not harm or annoy his neighbour…”. God also says in the Quran: “Worship God and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet)... Verily, God does not like such as are proud and boastful.” (Quran 4:36)

Islam also teaches us that even a Smile or a kind word is considered charity. Respect is highly valued in Islam. Our prophet and teacher Muhammad (PBUH) had the best of manners and every muslim should follow his sunnah and teaching.

If this is truly what happened between both neighbors, I pray that this Muslim man had learned something out of this unfortunate incident and that the author of this article understands that this sad encounter and incident does not represent Islam or Muslims in general.

I personally have excellent relationship with my neighbors muslims and non-muslims. We greet and we visit each other. We share meals when we cook a special dish. If something’s missing at home such as milk, sugar or bread, it’s with pleasure that we give each other what we need. If there are special celebrations or holidays it’s with great pleasure and happiness that we visit and wish each other happy holidays or happy marriage. We visit the sick and we take good care of each other. These are my neighbors from the first to the 4th floor and neighbors from the house next door and the house next to the house next door….this is how I wish it is, everywhere.

Une Québécoise au Soudan

Il y a quelques années, je me préparais pour mon premier séjour au Soudan. Mes nuits étaient remplies de cauchemars. Ce serait mon premier séjour dans un pays majoritairement musulman (au nord) où la charia est imposée par le gouvernement. Je ne savais à quoi m'attendre. Je ne pensais qu'au pire: un régime comme celui des talibans, devoir me couvrir de la tête aux pieds et ne pas pouvoir être libre de mes allers et venues.

Voilà maintenant plus d'un an que je vis à Khartoum, capitale du Soudan. Mes amis québécois me posent souvent cette question: dois-tu porter le voile? Non, absolument pas. Bien que je vive sous la charia, un «outil» surtout politique plutôt que religieux au Soudan, pas une fois ne m'a-t-on imposé de porter le voile. M'a-t-on dévisagée parce que je n'étais évidemment pas musulmane, ou m'a-t-on tenu des propos discriminatoires? Jamais. Certes, le Soudan est un pays coupé de l'extérieur, éprouvé par une guerre désastreuse au Darfour et qui se relève à peine d'une guerre civile entre le Nord et le Sud qui a duré 20 ans. Mais j'y rencontre quotidiennement un peuple incroyablement tolérant et accueillant.

Amal Baher est une jeune Soudanaise de 27 ans. Elle est responsable des finances d'un organisme international réputé ayant son siège à Khartoum. Elle prend sa tâche au sérieux et s'assure d'une main de fer que toutes les dépenses de l'organisme soient comptabilisées sans erreur, sans fraude. Ses collègues, surtout des hommes, la font rire lorsqu'ils racontent qu'ils craignent sa grande autorité. Pour moi, Amal est devenue une soeur avec qui je partage mes espoirs et inquiétudes.

Pourtant, Amal porte le voile. Mais cela ne me gêne pas.
À Khartoum, ce ne sont pas toutes les femmes qui portent le voile. Certaines le portent bien serré encadrant leur visage, ne dévoilant pas un cheveu. D'autres semblent l'avoir enroulé un peu par mégarde, à la dépêche en sortant de la maison. Super pour cacher quelques cheveux rebelles, m'a-t-on dit un jour, en me faisant un clin d'oeil. Jamais n'ai-je vu une femme soudanaise se cacher le visage. Parmi une vingtaine d'étudiants que j'ai formés en journalisme à l'Université de Khartoum, la grande majorité étaient de jeunes femmes qui portaient le voile.
À des milliers de kilomètres du Québec, je suis surprise de lire les propos tenus par Pauline Marois récemment à l'Assemblée nationale ou par Denise Bombardier dans Le Devoir. Moi qui me sens le plus souvent privilégiée d'être Québécoise, d'avoir eu la chance de vivre dans un pays pacifique et interethnique, je suis estomaquée de voir qu'on puisse tenir encore aujourd'hui un tel discours. Le foulard, un signe de domination? Des femmes qui viennent au Québec «pour fuir les affres de systèmes moyenâgeux»? Je ne nie pas qu'il existe des extrémistes musulmans, qui sans doute désirent voir la femme dominée dans un monde patriarcal. Et c'est bien sûr le cas aussi chez certains chrétiens.

Au Soudan, je travaille avec des femmes fortes, qui se font entendre, qui occupent des postes importants dans la société et surtout qui se font respecter. Le voile, qui est devenu un symbole si fort pour nous, est le moindre des obstacles auxquels elles font face. Comme toutes les autres femmes du monde, ce sont elles qui portent les pires fardeaux associés à la pauvreté et à la guerre. Ces voiles de toutes les couleurs, si étincelants, font partie de leur identité. Pour cela, je n'oserais jamais leur imposer mes préjudices de privilégiée occidentale.
Je ne voudrais pas à avoir à hésiter à inviter au Québec mon amie Amal; elle serait peut-être questionnée quant à son «soi-disant» choix. Mais je sais avec certitude que je serais fière d'inviter quiconque à Khartoum pour leur présenter les femmes exceptionnelles que je côtoie et qui choisissent de porter le voile, ou non.

Le nouveau locataire du bureau ovale, lui-même grande surprise de l’année 2008, a en effet signé le 5 février dernier un décret exécutif instituant le « Bureau des partenariats religieux » à la Maison-Blanche où siège la jeune Dalia Mogahed. De fait, elle est la première musulmane américaine d’origine arabe à entrer tous les matins à la Maison-Blanche avec son voile islamique pour conseiller le président des Etats-Unis. C’est sans doute un grand tabou qui vient d’être cassé pour une Amérique puritaine voire allergique à tout ce qui touche l’Islam et les musulmans.

D’abord, de quelle tolérance parlez-vous ?
Est-ce vraiment une « tolérance » de vouloir bannir le voile de nos écoles et d’empêcher une femme d’exercer son droit en tant que Canadienne de confession Musulmane sous prétexte d’égalité et d’intégrité des sexes ou même de laïcité? Mais voyons ! D’ailleurs, qu’en savez vous de l’égalité des sexes en Islam ou de la signification du voile ?
À l'inverse de plusieurs préjugés et idées inexactes qui sont véhiculées depuis un certain temps et mal interpréter de la part de beaucoup de gens, le voile de la femme en Islam n'est en aucun cas le symbole d'une revendication politique, ni une marque de soumission et d'infériorité quelconque par rapport aux hommes (époux, pères, frères etc.…) et encore moins un simple vêtement traditionnel, lié à certaines cultures.
Le port du hijab, est un élément de soumission envers Dieu seule. (que vous le croyez ou pas !).
En premier lieu, en portant le voile la femme musulmane fait acte de soumission et d'obéissance envers Dieu. En deuxième lieu, le Hijab agit pour sa protection morale, en préservant sa pudeur et sa chasteté.
C’est à l’age de puberté que les jeunes filles sont introduites au « Hijab ». Bien sure, le chemin spirituel est différent selon chacune. L’une peut se sentir prête de le porter toute suite tandis que les autres préfèrent attendre. Mais en aucun cas , nul Homme peut se donner le droit d’imposer le hijab !!
Mais voilà que des gens comme vous veulent imposer à ces filles de ne pas se voiler tout en recevant une éducation. « Pratiques dénigrantes » vous dites ? C’est VOTRE point de vue et pas celui de l’Islam ! Nous nous vous imposons pas notre religion mais nous demandons le respect .
En d’autre part, c’est vrai que dans certain pays musulmans les touristes sont conseillées de respecter certaines normes mais je vous assure qu’ils profitent d’une grande liberté par rapport à la façon de s’habiller comme à celle de manger ou de boire. Même que des lieux de cultes sont a leurs disposions. Allez voir des pays comme l’Egypte, la Tunisie, Dubaï, la Syrie, le Liban et autres… demander aux touristes ce qu’ils en pensent. Sauf bien sure si vous faite référence a des exemples extrême, tel que l’Afghanistan. Si vous prenez seulement des cas comme celui-ci et que vous voulez parler de « l’inverse », alors là j’ai l’impression qu’on agit comme des gamins : Si tu ne me laisse pas jouer au Nintendo dans ta maison et bien tu ne peux pas jouer chez moi non plus.
Est-ce si difficile de fonctionner ensemble, d’accepter et de respecter les autres comme ils sont dans une société si riche et mosaïque ?

Je crois que c’est une question de volonté. Jamais je ne vous imposerais mon point de vue, mais avant de faire allusion à l’égalité des sexes, faite l’effort de comprendre et de respecter les différentes cultures et religions formant notre société !
